Traffic Data and Control specialises in traffic and transport data collection, processing, analysis and interpretation. Unlike most of our competitors, we use qualified Traffic Engineers who are experienced in data collection and analysis in supervisory and data checking roles. We appreciate the importance of providing accurate, clean, and properly checked data for the technical analysis that follows. This is why we have a strong emphasis on quality control procedures applied throughout the preparation, collection, review and issue cycle of the project. Our efficient business structure also means we can work anywhere at competitive fees and due to the size of our pool of over a dozen senior technical staff, we can mobilise individuals and teams very quickly to respond to urgent requests.
Services and Capabilities
Traffic Data and Control has undertaken over 2500 intersection surveys in the last 4 years using both manual and video capture techniques. We often use and we recommend Miovision high-mast video, as a safe, efficient and highly accurate traffic counting system. We also have over 200 casual field staff on hand for manual data collection. Intersection surveys can include queue and delay data capture, pedestrian and cycle movements and a range of other user-specified information and we are able to adapt our processes to capture all of this data.
Vehicle Classification Survey
We use the MetroCount counter/classifier system and our staff are trained in the installation and data processes using this system. Outputs can be adjusted to include all Austroads classifications or user-specified summaries. Our very experienced team can provide advice or the "design" of how and where the road tubes are to be laid to maximize data accuracy, specifically for what the data is to be used for.
Parking assessments can require a wide range of data including occupancy, duration of stay, turnover, "bay-shuffling" and entry/exit identification. We employ a variety of field techniques including number plate data collection, video collection and occupancy counting. Also, we have developed innovative plate matching software to capture "near misses" and "bay shuffling" in time restricted areas. Our process includes linkages to GPS mapping allowing informative time series occupancy and duration of stay outputs to be presented.
Speed surveys are conducted as per the vehicle classification surveys. Counters are always installed on straight sections of road to ensure that vehicles are travelling consistently.A variety of speed reports from individual vehicle data to average and 85th percentile speeds can be produced over 15 minute or daily periods by direction.
TDC has completed hundreds of queue length and back of queue surveys using both manual and video-based techniques. We most commonly use high mast video collection units (VCU's) to conduct queue length surveys.
Travel Time Surveys
Traffic Data and Control has successfully undertaken over 15 major travel time programs in the past 4 years as well as dozens of travel time surveys as part of multi-purpose survey programs. We use Garmin GPS units and GIS Mapping software which provide detailed, accurate data to determine congestion hot spots, signal coordination issues and peak travel time profiles.
We have completed a number of pedestrian surveys across Queensland and New South Wales.Pedestrian surveys are custom designed for each type of survey including intersections, pathway, shopping center and public transport surveys.
Bicycle surveys are becoming an increasingly important type of data collection and we have developed a number of techniques for collection of quantitative and qualitative data. We have completed a number of bicycle surveys across Queensland and Sydney.
Vehicle Occupancy Surveys
We have completed a number of occupancy surveys using video data and manual observations. These types of surveys will become increasingly important with emerging vehicle sharing trends.
Trip Generation Surveys
TDC has completed various trip generation surveys over the past 4 years for NSW Roads and Maritime Sservice and Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads. Recently completed land use traffic generation surveys include fast food outlets, drive through coffee shops, medium high rise units, small shopping centres and industrial areas.
Origin Destination Surveys
TDC does not currently use camera techniques for this survey type as we have concerns regarding adequately capturing number plates from fixed cameras. Instead, we use manual observation and recording techniques for these surveys
Either High Mast video cameras (VCU's) or Metrocount units (RSU's) are used to conduct midblock surveys. For counts of less than one day or on highways with and AADT of more than 40,000 vehicles we use VCU's. For counts on quieter roads we install RSU's.
TDC has managed numerous other survey types including on board public transport surveys, pedestrian surveys, interview surveys, vehicle occupancy surveys and customer research surveys. Experienced transport planners are involved in survey design and implementation to minimise survey costs whilst maximising data.
